Starlooks: Cosmetics For The Look of A Star

     You have quite a choice when it comes to choosing a brand of cosmetics these days.  You also have quite a choice in monthly subscription services for beauty boxes. It’s the all new rage, a monthly subscription service where you have items delivered directly to your door for a small fee.  One of my favorites is by a company called Starlooks which makes their own line of cosmetics, hair care products and other beauty items. Their monthly subscription box, called the Starbox, is different than some of the other boxes in that they will send you 3 or 4 full sized products from their own line.  Not samples, full size products.  Each box will have a minimum value of around $35, but will only cost you $15, not a bad deal! You can also go onto the Starlooks site and see a preview of that month’s box, what came in boxes over the months past, and, best of all, find tips on how to wear the products in each months box by visiting the Looksbook.

     When my box arrived, I could hardly wait to open it! It came in this pretty black box embossed with the Starlooks logo in gold, and tied with a baby blue ribbon. Opening the box, then separating the cheerful peach-colored tissue paper, I discovered three full sized products along with two crystals. There was a very nice Small Precision eye shadow brush, an eye shadow and an eye liner pencil.

What I Say: A very nice brush, perfect for detailed, precise application. Soft bristles. A good addition to my growing set!

Neutral Eye Shadows in Caricature
What They Say: Richly pigmented eye shadows that glide on smoothly. Available in matte, shimmer or frost, 43 shades.
What I say: I like this a lot! It comes in this nice, handy case that opens up to include a mirror and small foam applicator. The eye shadow does go on very smoothly, long lasting. The shade I received, Caricature, is a very light brown, shimmery shade. Unfortunately, it is hard to see with my skin tone, but would make a great addition for highlighting other colors.

Diamondline Eye Pencil in Myth
What They Say: An opaque, metallic finish eye pencil, great as a liner, or try using a brush and blending all over the eyelid as an eye shadow. Available in six shades.
What I Say: I really liked this eye liner! The shade I received is called Myth which is a metallic, dark silvery-gray. A very soft pencil that goes on quite easily, and is a cinch to blend. I had to be super careful when applying as it does want to smear easily since the lead is so soft.

     Verdict: All in all I was very satisfied with my box. The total value of the items is around $32, not including the cost of the two crystals which I can use for jewelry or something else creative.  Not a bad deal for $15!   I was impressed with the quality of the brush and make up, and would definitely recommend joining Starlooks’ monthly subscription box service, Starbox. You can subscribe through the site and get the boxes for yourself, or give them to a friend as a wonderful gift idea!

Zevia Soda: All Natural, All Good

     Soda is one of the world’s most liked drinks, and possibly one of the worst for you!  Sugar, sodium, caffeine, artificial color and preservatives, high calorie content, the list goes on and on.  It’s a shame that something that tastes so good, is so bad!  But don’t get too let down, because there are plenty of alternatives out there, and I had the chance to try one of the most popular one’s, Zevia, All Natural Soda.  Zevia is not just a zero-calorie or a sugar free soda, in fact, it is all of those AND is all natural!
     Zevia soda is made without any artificial sweeteners, instead it is made with Stevia which is a plant from the sunflower family that is originally native to South America.  The leaf is actually 300 times sweeter than sugar, but it has absolutely no calories nor does it have an effect on blood sugar, making this soda ideal for people who are watching their sugar intake.  There is also very little to no sodium in the soda, and only a few specific flavors contain caffeine which has been naturally derived from coffee.  Hence, an all natural soda with zero calories, zero fat and zero unhealthy ingredients.

    I was pleasantly surprised with this soda. I am not a fan of all those other kinds of sweeteners, I really do not like any kind of sweetener except sugar, so I was expecting Zevia to have that distinctive non-sugar flavor, but it did not.  I’ll be honest and say that there were some flavors I just did not like, but everybody’s tastes are different. Each one we tried, tasted pretty much like the name, though I personally thought some could stand a little more of the flavoring.  My favorites were the Orange and the Black Cherry.  My son, on the other hand, loved them all!  And that is great news because I try to limit the amount of sugar he gets in his diet, as well as caffeine, so this is a perfect compromise!  As far as a natural soda, one that is actually not bad for you, Zevia is an excellent choice!

     In today’s increasingly green world they are more and more options coming available as an alternative to paper products.  One of the rooms with the largest amount of paper waste is the kitchen.  Ever year people go through thousands of paper towels that they use once then throw away. The average household uses 1 to 2 rolls of paper towels a week.  That adds up to a lot of waste!  In fact, it adds up to about *3000 TONS of paper towel waste being produced PER DAY!  That’s a lot of trees cut down that simply cannot grow back fast enough to keep up with the demand.  Paperless Kitchen offers many alternatives to this problem.

     I received a roll of reusable bamboo paper towels made by Bambooee.   As you can guess from their name, they make their product from bamboo.  “Okay,” you say, “so instead of cutting down a bunch of trees, they cut down a bunch of bamboo!”  Well, let me tell you a little bit about bamboo, and you will see why it is a much better choice!  *First of all, bamboo is the world’s fastest growing plant.  That means it is a sustainable resource because unlike trees, bamboo grows fast enough to replace what is used.   Bamboo also requires no pesticides, no insecticides and no fertilizers.  It fights Global Warming by taking in 400% more greenhouse gases and produces 35% more oxygen than standing trees. AND it is biodegradable.  So imagine all the benefits of using bamboo paper towels!


     One roll of Bambooee towels is equivalent to using sixty (60) rolls of regular paper towels, or up to 6 months worth of normal paper towel usage!*  Amazing!  There are twenty (20) sheets per roll, and at first glance, they really resemble regular paper towels both in look and in feel.  But that is where the similarities end.  First of all, these bamboo sheets are much thicker and softer than regular paper towels.  They are also reusable, washable and bleachable!  Yep, you read that correctly, you can throw them into your washing machine in warm water, add some detergent or whatever and wash away.  Just do not add fabric softener, put them in the dryer or iron them, and they will be good as new. When I first read this I was like , “no way”! Well, yes way!  I threw one in with my wash expecting it to come out in shreds, but instead it came out looking brand new!  That should give you an idea about how strong and sturdy these towels are. That and the fact that was the roll not perforated, I would have had to use scissors to cut a sheet off because they are near impossible to tear!  Even soaking wet, I could not get the sheet to tear!

      They are also super absorbent!  As a test I spilled a coffee mug of water on the floor and it only took one of these towels to dry it all up. Then I simply squeezed it back out and voila! Good to go again!  I also tested one using my regular household cleaner, and it worked perfect. In fact, using one Bambooee towel I was able to clean my counters, the sinks and wipe down my cabinets;  I just rinsed it out with warm water between tasks. I even used one to wash my pots and pans!  These towels are wonderful, and their uses are endless!  Use them to clean, dust,  wash the dishes, dry your hands, they are even strong enough and soft enough to clean your child’s face after a meal!  A definite addition to any green kitchen!

Space Savers: My Peace-of-Mind Saver!

     I am one of those people who absolutely love her kitchen. I love to have every kitchen gadget, utensil and tool that I think I might ever possibly have a use for.  I also love to cook and bake and that means I have a huge collection of spices and seasonings, which causes a slight problem being that I live in an apartment.  I do not have the counter space and cabinet space I would like have, so therefore, my storage options are getting slim!  Thankfully, I have found help in one awesome site, aptly named, Space Savers! 
     Space Savers offers a great selection of innovative storage and organizational products to help you keep every space in your home and office neat and organized.  From your kitchen, to your child’s room, closets to school lockers, this site has what you need to help with the clutter!  The site itself is extremely well organized where you can search for items by room, and find all sorts of tips and suggestions to help with storage and organizational issues. Their prices are very affordable, and the products well made.
    Since I need help with storage in my kitchen, I chose to sample and review a Stainless Steel Double Turntable which is made by Dial Industries.  This modern-looking, stainless steel Lazy Susan is just what I needed!  It stands about 6” high and has two platforms, each of which measure approximately 10 3/4"” in diameter with a 5” space between the two. There is plenty of room for spice bottles on the bottom and an assortment of items on the top, and the whole thing takes up very little space.  It sits on ball bearings which allows the entire unit to rotate, making finding what you need simple!

    

    
     It does come unassembled, but was very easy to put together, taking maybe all of 5 minutes. The only tool needed was a screwdriver.  Once I had it together, I was very pleased with the size and sturdiness.  It is quite light, but has no-slip grips on the bottom to keep it from sliding around or scratching surfaces.


    
     I have seen many people use these on their tables to hold common spices and herbs, and sugar and cream bowls on the bottom, then salt and pepper shakers with a napkin holder on top. I chose to use it as additional storage space for all of my often-used spices and herbs.  I was surprised at how many fit on it, freeing up some additional, much needed cabinet space!

   The EatSmart Precision Pro Digital Kitchen Scale  I was sent to review has all of the important features one should look for when selecting a kitchen scale.  It has the four separate units of measurement that are read in decimals: ounces, grams, kilograms and pounds, with a maximum capacity of 11 pounds.  You can easily switch between the units of measurement with the push of a single button.  The scale also has a tare button which allows you to eliminate the weight of the bowl or plate.  The LCD display is large and very easy to read, and it’s weighing platform is large enough for most of your conventional kitchen needs. I will say however, if you are planning on measuring large bowls, molds or other larger-sized items, you may want to find a larger scale, as I can see how larger dishes could block your view of the display.  As far as sturdiness, the plastic body and its light weight gives the impression that it is not as sturdy as some scales, but I have had no problems.  It does have no-slip grips on the bottom which prevent it from sliding around, and its small size and light weight make storage a cinch!   It also has a three-minute auto shut-off so you won’t run down the batteries while mixing ingredients or if you forget to turn it off.
