The Healing Power of Plants: Plant Therapy Essential Oils Part Three

DIY Fabric Softener Recipe & Win Your Own Set of Oils!
planttherapy

If you read Part One of this series, you are a bit more familiar with Essential Oils and their uses.  Over the next two posts I will show you two more simple recipes for common household products using products you most likely have on hand and the Essential oils I received from Plant Therapy.  And, remember, for each recipe one lucky Bullock’s Buzz reader will win all four of the oils I reviewed! That means there will be a total of three (3) winners who will each get four Essential oils: Lavender, Sweet Orange, Lemon and Tea Tree! So make sure you follow along each day!

essential oils 101
Each of these recipes are eco-friendly and work just as well, if not better, than their commercial counterparts. You do not have to use the exact same Essential oils I have chosen to use, although I did take into consideration each of the oils cleansing and therapeutic properties. It is up to you what scents you prefer, and keep in mind certain oils blend better with others. Check out individual Essential oil’s descriptions on the Plant Therapy website for suggested blends. Also, the amount of oil you choose to add is also up to you as different people like different strength scents. Always start with a few drops, as some oils are quite potent, then add more as needed.

The recipes are based on others I have found through my readings of books and many different sites on the internet. I have chosen my own fragrance combinations.
Today is our second DIY recipe post, and the second giveaway.  The recipe for today is for a home made fabric softener. Don’t forget to enter the giveaway at the end of the post to win a set of your own Essential oils just like the ones I reviewed!

Fabric Softener

This recipe is nice if you want to soften your clothing and give it a nice scent, at the same time.

essential oils 016
Ingredients
1/4 cup baking soda
2 teaspoons cornstarch (optional)
3 to 5 drops essential oil (your favorite scent) I made two different scents, using Lemon and Tea Tree for one and Lavender only for the second.
Directions:
Sift the dry ingredients into a container that has a lid.

and then sifting the mixture 2-3 more times to thoroughly mix the oil in with the dry ingredients.

I used the following combinations:
Container One: 2 drops Sweet Orange, 1 drop Lemon
Container Two: 3 drops of Lavender only
Keep in a sealed, air-tight container, clearly labeled.
When ready to use, scoop 1 to 2 tablespoons into a bag made of sheer fabric such as muslin or an old pair of hose . Use a rubber band, string or ribbon to tie it closed.

Throw it in the dryer with the clothes, set the dryer and that’s it!

Here are some other blend suggestions:
Lavender with Tea Tree is relaxing
Lemon and Tea Tree is great for cleaning
Lavender and Orange lifts your spirits
Fresh Citrus Blend: 5 parts lemon essential oil, 2 parts lavender essential oil, and 1 part sweet orange essential oil
Another Fresh Citrus Blend: 2 parts sweet orange essential oil, 1 part lemon essential oil
Flowery and fresh blend: Equal parts lavender and lemon essential oils

I love the idea of making my own fabric softener! I can't usually stand the scents/fragrances in the stores and am always looking for a softer/more subtle option for still making my clothes smell great. I also enjoy adding a few drops of essential oils right to my wool dryer balls. :)
