The Healing Power of Plants: Plant Therapy Essential Oils Part Four

DIY Air Freshener & Win Your Own Set of Essential Oils!
planttherapy

Over the last two posts I have shown you two simple recipes for common household products using products you most likely have on hand and the Essential oils I received from Plant Therapy.   Today, I will show you another easy recipe, this one for a delightful Air Freshener.  And, one lucky Bullock’s Buzz reader will have the chance to win all four of the oils I reviewed: Lavender, Sweet Orange, Lemon and Tea Tree! So make sure you enter at the end of the post!

essential oils 101

This recipe is eco-friendly and works just as well, if not better, than its commercial counterparts. You do not have to use the exact same Essential oils I have chosen to use, although I did take into consideration each of the oils cleansing and therapeutic properties. It is up to you what scents you prefer, and keep in mind certain oils blend better with others.  Check out individual Essential oil’s descriptions on the Plant Therapy website for suggested blends.  Also, the amount of oil you choose to add is also up to you as different people like different strength scents. Always start with a few drops, as some oils are quite potent, then add more as needed.

This recipe is based on others I have found through my readings of books and many different sites on the internet. I have chosen my own fragrance combinations.

 Air Freshener

Ingredients
Lavender, Lemon and Sweet Orange essential oils (or those of your choice)
Distilled or Spring Water
High Proof Alcohol such as vodka (OPTIONAL)
4oz. spray bottle with a fine mist setting
Directions
Pour 3 ounces of water into a clean spray bottle ( or if using the optional alcohol mix 1.5 oz. water and 1.5 oz. alcohol)

essential oils 066

Add 30 to 40 drops of essential oil (I used 15 drops Sweet Orange, 9 drops Lavender and 6 drops Lemon) You may want to try 20 drops at first.

Shake well to mix (this is why you only make 3 ounces of liquid, so you have room to shake the liquid)

Let sit for 24 hours before using to be sure you have the scent correct (not too weak for your taste).   Label bottle with contents and date. You can also tie a ribbon around the bottle, or add a printed sticker to make it pretty!
Store in dark, cool and dry place.  Shake well before each use. Mist lightly, not allowing it to fall on furniture or into food or drinks.  I spray my comforter, curtains and straight into the air.

Here are some other suggested scent blends:
Lavender with Tea Tree is relaxing
Lemon and Tea Tree is great for cleaning
Lavender and Orange lifts your spirits
Fresh Citrus Blend: 5 parts lemon essential oil, 2 parts lavender essential oil, and 1 part sweet orange essential oil
Another Fresh Citrus Blend: 2 parts sweet orange essential oil, 1 part lemon essential oil
Flowery and fresh blend: Equal parts lavender and lemon essential oils

Thanks for these tips! I am just curious, does it affect the scent if you use the vodka? Or does it affect how long it lasts? You mention making sure it does not fall on furniture. I'm guessing the oils don't stain fabric since you use them on curtains, but have you ever experiences of them staining or messing with the finishes on wooden furniture? Thanks for answering my questions.

Great post. I definitely recommend using the vodka. It helps keep any bacteria from forming into the bottles.
